Toda Community Centre
About
Toda Community Center in Bekkapathi Mund, Nilgiris, is a community-led cultural infrastructure project, in initiated by the Dist administration and co-created with the Toda people. It reinterprets the traditional barrel-vaulted Toda hut as a contemporary space for rituals, gatherings, workshops and community initiatives, while respecting Toda cosmology and spatial logic. Governance of the center is rooted in existing Toda institutions and customary leadership, with external collaborators in supportive roles. The center will function as a platform for cultural continuity—language, rituals, craft, oral histories—and as a hub for emerging livelihoods such as craft-based enterprises, eco-cultural interpretation and skills training. It will enable education, skill-building workshops, health/wellness initiatives, and economic activities like community-driven enterprises. By combining regenerative materials, merging authenticity with functionality, participatory design-build processes and community-driven programming, it positions architecture as a tool for safeguarding heritage, strengthening self-governance and enabling dignified, culturally anchored livelihood opportunities for current and future generations of the Toda community.
